Important Maintenance Before A Yacht Delivery

Updated: Oct 29

Many times, a delivery voyage represents the most challenging sailing a yacht will encounter in years, highlighting the importance of proper maintenance to ensure a successful journey.

While pleasure cruisers may remain safely moored in a marina during inclement weather, delivery crews are expected to navigate through these conditions. This is precisely why they are hired, to get cold and wet so you don't have to.

Such circumstances can reveal vulnerabilities in a vessel, particularly one that has been used primarily for leisurely cruising in fair weather. Therefore, here is a checklist of essential items to inspect before your delivery crew step onboard.

Starting with the hull

If your boat has been stationary for a while, there might be marine growth on the hull that could impede its speed and increase fuel consumption which results in the delivery being more costly. Heavy growth can even reduce the water flow to the engine causing cooling issues.

Ensure all seacocks and through-hull fittings are functioning smoothly.

Steering

It is crucial to inspect the steering system before heading out to sea to prevent potential serious problems. Make sure to examine control cables, blocks, hydraulic lines and fluid levels for hydralic systems. Verify the functionality of the Autohelm and ensure the emergency tiller or alternative arrangements are operational.

Engine

It is important to regularly inspect the water and oil levels, as well as check the belt tension and impellor condition. Additionally, be vigilant for any fluid leaks, such as water, oil, or fuel, as these issues can lead to significant problems at sea and result in costly delays. It is advisable to address any potential problems before the arrival of your yacht delivery crew.

Ensure that basic spare parts, such as belts, impellors, and filters, are readily available onboard to minimize any potential downtime in case of a failure.

Check the batteries to ensure they are in good condition, charging properly, and inspect their levels for distilled water if necessary. Also, examine the connections for any signs of corrosion.

Keep the sea strainer clear to maintain a good flow of water, and inspect the engine mounts for any issues.

Standing and running rigging

Prior to departure, we will conduct a visual inspection of the rig. This includes examining all standing rigging for any signs of fractures, excessive corrosion, and the presence of split pins.

We will inspect the shrouds for any exposed strands, which could indicate a break somewhere along the line. Depending on the age of the rigging and the upcoming voyage, it may be advisable to seek a professional rig inspection, which may also be required by insurance for coverage.

Given the extensive use running rigging undergoes during a delivery, it is essential to check lines for chafing and wear, inspect blocks, ensure furling gear is in working order, reefing system functioning and confirm that winches are functioning properly.

Bilge Inspection

It is important to ensure that the bilges are free from any debris that could block the bilge pumps. Both manual and electric pumps need to be checked. Furthermore, the float switches, non-return valves, and alarms should be assessed. Check the bilges for water ingress, inspect stern glands and seals. While inspecting the bilge, visually inspect the keel bolts for signs of corrosion.

 Safety Equipment

To meet insurance standards, the boat must carry a valid liferaft and flares for the journey, as well as fire extinguishers.

All safety gear should be with in date for the delivery duration and replace any items that have expired.

Documentation

Proper documentation is crucial when a yacht delivery originates in one country, ends in another, or traverses through the waters of several countries. This documentation should encompass registration papers, proof of VAT status, insurance documents, as well as any required permits or licenses.

Summing up

Effective maintenance and careful planning help your delivery team save time, ultimately leading to cost savings for the client, as delays can be expensive. Addressing minor issues before they escalate into major problems ensures the efficient operation of your yacht delivery service.
